Regulator accused of abuse of power over lawyer's appointment

The head of the Czech Energy Regulatory Office (ERU) has been accused by the police of breach of trust and abuse of power in relation to the appointment of her deputy.

Ms Vitaskova also faces charges in connection with the construction of two solar power plants in north Bohemia Tuangtong Soraprasert

Alena Vitaskova, chair of the ERU, appointed Renata Vesecka, formerly supreme state attorney, to become her deputy at the ERU in November. The anti-corruption police have said that rules regarding the experience of a person in the deputy’s post have been breached. A spokesman said: ‘Detectives have concluded that she [Vitaskova] thereby acted completely at variance with the energy law, since Renata Vesecka did not meet the legal conditions for the execution of the post of an ERU deputy head. That is a seven-year practice in the energy field minimally, at least three of which must be in a managing position.’

Conditions met

Both Ms Vitaskova and the ERU have said that the new deputy met the conditions required for taking up the appointment, as she had dealt with cases related to the energy industry in her previous post. The ERU is not expecting resignations. Source: Ceske Noviny
