Russia moves to tackle online piracy

Russia has introduced an anti-piracy law to tackle rampant abuse.

New law will see pirated material taken down within 72 hours, or domain is blocked Ilona Baha

The new law is being enforced by the communications regulator Roskomnadzor. Copyright-holders can aske the regulator to force offending websites to take down pirated material within 72 hours. If the sites do not obey, they can have their whole doman blocked immediately. The issue would then go to court for a definitive ruling. 'The law will help create new ways of sharing quality video content, including free content with adverts,' a Roskomnadzor spokesman told BBC News. An estimated 92 per cent of Russian users of e-books have downloaded content from the net without paying, according to one report.
