Sarkozy hits out over bugging of calls to lawyer

Former French President has spoken out in complaint about being bugged in phone calls with his lawyer and other people.

‘The sacred principles of the republic have been trampled underfoot with an unprecedented violence and lack of scruple,’ he wrote in Le Figaro.  An investigation was launched into him, following the taping of conversations between him and his lawyer in which, it is alleged, emerged evidence that he had sought to influence judges illegally. He and his lawyer had bought mobile phones under false names - but they continued to be bugged after the police discovered the true identity of the owners of the phones. 

No evidence

Other allegations against him related to receiving money from Libya’s former leader Colonel Gadaffi. He denied these allegations and any inappropriate acts by him and his lawyer. He said that no evidence has been found against him ‘despite months of inquiry.'  Source: Financial Times
