India's Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju has confirmed that the country's highly controversial sedition laws are now under review by the Law Commission.

On Wednesday, Mr Rijiju informed India's Rajya Sabha that the home ministry has asked the Law Commission to investigate and report on the status of the country's law on sedition, admitting to the upper house that sedition charges often sit at odds with the right to free speech. India's sedition law has drawn heavy criticism over recent months after a New Delhi student was arrested on campus at Jawaharlal Nehru University for allegedly yelling anti-nationalist slogans at a campus event.

'[R]eports and suggestions have come that there should be a comprehensive review of the criminal justice system in the country... sedition law has also been brought under this scrutiny, that there must be some amendment to it because the meaning is very wide,' Mr Rijiju told the upper house.

The minister also revealed that the Law Commission has already submitted a report on India's law against attempting suicide, recommending decriminalisation of the act.
