Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has promoted a record 44 lawyers to its partnership in the firm’s latest promotions round, up from 32 last year.
Just under half of the latest cohort were women (21 of the 44), a significant jump from the nine women (28%) who made the cut in 2023. The promotions will take effect from 1 January.
The US dominated the promotions round, with the bulk of new partners located in its New York office (20), followed by Houston (seven) and Washington DC (six), and one apiece in Los Angeles and Palo Alto. There were also six promotions exclusively in London and two in Hong Kong, with antitrust and foreign investment partner Josh Buckland set to split his time between Brussels and London.
The firm’s banking and credit and private funds practices saw the most promotions, with 10 each. They include banking and credit lawyers Brandon Barton in Houston and Matthew Hope in London, who will also sit in its special situations practice, as well as private funds lawyers Nadia Bonnet and Sophie Hasse in New York and Vandana Harris and Mia Hatfield in London.
That was followed by six promotions in the firm’s registered funds practice (including Meredith Abrams and Jacqueline Edwards in New York) and five in its M&A practice (including David Bumgardner and Ana Sanchez in Houston).
There were also three promotions each in real estate and capital markets, two in executive compensation and employee benefits, and litigation (including Summer Craig, whose remit will also span insurance and reinsurance) and one each in exempt organisations, antitrust and foreign investment, and securitisation. New York-based lawyer Amanda Hayman McGovern will sit across the firm’s family office and private funds practices.
The firm has also been busy in the lateral hiring market over the past year, having earlier this month made a twin M&A hire from Kirkland & Ellis and Jones Day (Matthew Fisher and Adam Cromie respectively). It also added funds partner Kenneth Burdon from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom in May ahead of its Boston office launch.
Back in February, the firm also named Wheatly MacNamara as managing partner of its London office – the first women ever to lead Simpson Thacher’s outpost in the City. She took over the role last month from Jason Glover.
