The Washington Post reports that Mr Sloan – a litigation partner at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom – has significant government experience and will reopen the State Department’s Office of Guantanamo Closure.
The office was closed in January when diplomat Daniel Fried was reassigned by the Obama administration.
Officials are yet to comment on the appointment before a formal announcement is made later today.
