Survey: Oz firms turn to head-hunters for top recruits

The vast majority of Australian law firms employ head-hunters as the primary method for senior level recruitment, a survey revealed today.

Researchers found that 80 per cent of the jurisdiction’s firms opted for executive search agencies, with the bulk of the remaining strategies suggested in the report by Seldon Gill Consulting including advertising in newspapers, on jobs boards and on firms’ own websites.

The use of popular professional networking web site LinkedIn is rarely employed at this level, mainly because of time limits on senior management, reports Lawyers Weekly.
One human resources director responded to the survey: ‘There is no doubt that targeted search [headhunting] is worthwhile … not just for the shortlist, but for information you get as a result of researching who is doing what in the market.’
Seldon Gill managing director Graham Seldon commented: ‘Commercially savvy law firms realise that in order to run a successful business they need to have smart business managers on their team.
‘Law firms who do not invest in a proper management structure, with adequate succession planning, are at risk of seeing their businesses stall.’
