Out of the 156 law firms that took part (including a majority of American Lawyer 200 firms), 95 achieved a perfect score this year, an increase from 87 last year. Another 20 firms scored above 90 per cent.
Specific policies and practices
The index, developed by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, evaluates policies on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees using 40 specific policies and practices. To achieve a perfect score, firms must have fully-inclusive equal employment opportunity policies, provide equal employment benefits, demonstrate organisational LGBT competency, evidence their commitment to equality publicly and implement internal guidelines prohibiting philanthropic giving to organisations that discriminate against LGBT people.
