Online dating business Match Group has named Sean Edgett as its next chief legal officer, filling the seat left vacant by Jared Sine who exited earlier this year.

Edgett joins from US food tech company Upside Foods, where he was also CLO and secretary. At Match Group, he will be responsible for leading the legal team and related functions, and will report directly to CEO Bernard Kim. He is due to take up his new role on 23 September.

Dallas-based Match Group owns online dating brands including Tinder, Hinge, OkCupid and PlentyOfFish.

Kim said: “Sean’s legal expertise, honed through his leadership roles at Twitter and Upside Foods, where he oversaw critical functions including regulatory affairs, intellectual property, corporate governance and public policy, makes him an invaluable addition. I am confident that he will not only strengthen our legal framework but also propel us forward as an industry leader.”

Edgett spent a year and a half at Upside Foods, having arrived following his departure from Twitter where he worked for more than a decade across a range of legal roles, most recently as GC.

Prior to that he was director for legal at NetApp, his first in-house role. He previously worked in private practice as an associate at Latham & Watkins and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld before that.

He said: “Match Group’s mission of connecting people globally through innovative technology is inspiring, and I look forward to collaborating with the talented team to navigate the evolving legal landscape and help drive the next chapter of growth.”

Sine, meantime, left Match in February to join web services company GoDaddy as CLO. He spent almost eight years at Match, first as GC and then as CLO. He also had a spell at Expedia, having worked at Latham & Watkins and Cravath Swaine & Moore before that.

Match Group’s associate GC for litigation, IP and compliance, Jeanne Teckman, had been filling in as interim CLO while the company searched for Sine’s replacement.

Back in June, US dating app rival Bumble promoted its interim CLO Elizabeth Monteleone to the role permanently after previous CLO Laura Franco left earlier in the year to join Las Vegas Sphere-owner Sphere Entertainment and Madison Square Garden Entertainment.
