UK law firms diversify away from legal services

Two more UK law firms have revealed plans to develop non-legal services - in accident management and insurance and finance.

Firms which obtain a licence to operate as an ABS (alternative business structure) can introduce non-lawyers into their businesses and extend their services more easily outside the law. MSB Solicitors, in Liverpool, was granted its ABS certificate this month and is expanding into insurance and finance. Paul Bibby, MSB's managing partner, told The Liverpool Daily Post: 'I think they are areas where people will feel comfortable and confident if a law practice undertook these activities.'

Accident issues

Meanwhile, also based in Liverpool, SGI Legal received its licence in August and is working in the personal injury area and extending its services into broader accident management issues.
