Judge Lucy Koh said that when the jury set the $1bn award - which was the largest pay-out in a series of patent battles between the two smartphone manufactures - they incorrectly calculated part of the damages, reports the BBC.
Bounce-back
Judge Koh also ordered a new jury trial to decide how much – if any – damages Samsung should pay for infringements stemming from the original case.
The $450 million chopped from the damages bill will be reassessed and could be increased or lowered.
The trial concerns 14 Samsung products which Apple claims used patented technology, such as the ‘bounce-back’ feature and zooming into pictures.
According to the report, Samsung overtook Apple as the world's biggest seller of smartphones last year.
