The US has never acknowledged any country’s sovereignty over Jerusalem since Israel’s founding in 1948, but the Supreme Court will hear Zivotofsky’s case and is expected to make a ruling before his Bar Mitzvah in late 2015. Zivotofsky’s case involves a 2002 law overturned by lower courts which allows Israel to be listed as the country of birth if an American passport holder was born in Jerusalem. The State Department’s current protocol is: ‘For a person born in Jerusalem, write Jerusalem as the place of birth in the passport.’ Source: The Guardian
