Walmart ups its compliance game

Walmart has launched its compliance reforms in the aftermath of its bribery crisis at a cost of around 100 million dollars.

The company has removed the compliance function from the legal department and set it up as a separate department. Previously, the general counsel of each country had assumed responsibility for compliance reporting into the local Chief Executive officer.The company has also appointed international, regional and local chief compliance officers as well as an e-commerce compliance chief in a move to create a division which provides a global picture of compliance activity.

New appointments

Daniel Trujillo has been appointed the international chief compliance officer. Mr Trujillo, who joined the company from Schlumberger, is an expert on Latin America, the centre of Walmart’s bribery difficulties.The plan was unveiled in the recently published  ‘Global Compliance Program Report which formed part of Walmart’s  annual proxy statement
