Wanted: women lawyer mentors in Australia

A mentoring programme aimed at women solicitors has launched in New South Wales.

New South Wales: mentoring programme kicks off

The scheme is pitched at women of 10 to 15 years post-qualification experience and is being run by the Law Society of New South Wales.

Balancing act

According to the publication Australian Legal Business, the programme is intended to provide mentoring and networking opportunities, as well as objective and confidential advice, to help women achieve professional success. It particularly aims to provide advice to women making key choices about how to balance their careers and personal commitments.
This year’s programme will see 25 applicants matched with more senior legal professionals.

Gertner honoured

Elsewhere, America’s National Association of Women Lawyers has awarded Harvard Law School professor Nancy Gertner its highest honour, the Arabella Babb Mansfield Award.
Ms Gertner -- a former judge at the US District Court of Massachusetts – has more than 20 years experience as a criminal defence and civil rights lawyer.
