A Mississippi woman is attempting to change the state’s laws on stray canines after being accused of dog-napping. WMC-TV Memphis reports that Stephanie Mitchell – a director at Drifter’s Place Animal Rescue – could not ignore what appeared to be a stray dog and, after being unable to find a tag or the owner, took the pooch home for the night.
Fast forward 24 hours, and Ms Mitchell received a ’phone call notifying her that a warrant was out for her arrest.
Ms Mitchell had posted a picture of the dog on Facebook, which was seen by the owner who then accused her of stealing. Mississippi law states that any person who steals, takes, or carries away another person’s dog can be indicted on the felony charge. However, a deputy with the Lafayette County Sheriff’s office said the authorities had dealt with similar cases before – after all, the county has no leash laws.
