Nigeria: women lawyers press for change

The All Africa web site reports a recent call by the local chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers on Nigeria’s government to stop dragging its feet in implementing international treaties and conventions designed to protect women and children.

Urgent need

The site quotes a statement from the group saying the issue has become urgent ‘because violence against women and girls is the most pervasive human rights violation’. The statement goes on to point to figures showing that as many as seven in 10 Nigerian women experience violence in their lifetimes.
‘This is therefore a call for national commitment to address and prevent violence against women and girls. Putting an end to violence against women and girls is everyone's responsibility,’ said the group.
